    Washington State Historical Society’s mission is to partner with our communities to explore how history connects us all. Their vision is to be the recognized destination for Washington State history.

    As the Senior Graphic Designer, you will collaborate with staff in all agency departments, with partner organizations, and with vendors and contractors to develop materials needed to tell the story of Washington’s history and to support ongoing programs/initiatives of WSHS. Your work will provide excellent digital and print communications to share the agency’s work with communities across Washington and beyond.

    Design for Exhibits, Education, Philanthropy, and more:

    • Design, production, and sometimes distribution management for posters, brochures, rack cards, event signage, invitations with reply devices, annual reports, presentations, handouts, guides, curriculum, building banners, pins/buttons, swag, PowerPoint templates, digital graphics, and other design needs.
    • Develop infographics for use in reports, presentations, and on website.
    • Vendor relations: Obtain cost estimates from and coordinate with vendors for a variety of projects. Includes researching vendors and materials, price comparisons, uploading files for production, quality review, managing delivery, supervising banner installation, and other production related tasks.
    • Develop and maintain WSHS brand standards. Assist WSHS staff in applying brand standards, accessing logo files, understanding and using color palette and fonts.
    • Ensure graphic design and communication products comply with guidelines for Americans with Disabilities Act and Title VI.
    • Possible video recording and photography.
    • Participate in administrative, organizational, or support tasks as needed, such as providing budget summaries for design projects; removing and disposing of expired collateral, banners, or signage; reviewing and organizing digital and hard copy files and storage; annual inventory of agency assets (computers, etc.); researching and problem solving technical issues; attending all-staff meetings

    Design for quarterly Columbia Magazine and Explore It:

    • Work proactively with the Marketing & Communications (MarCom) Director and the COLUMBIA Editor to design and produce the quarterly journal COLUMBIA and quarterly events calendar Explore It.
    • In collaboration with the editor, identify and gather all the content elements for each issue of COLUMBIA. Includes: reading articles and researching to source relevant images, and to obtain rights for use of images and purchase images as needed; coordinating with advertisers to obtain ad copy; occasionally reaching out to authors for higher resolution images, headshots, bios; design in-house ads; coordinate with MarCom director/editor/proofreader rounds of edits and corrections as needed, relying on Chicago Manual of Style and COLUMBIA styleguide.
    • Explore It: In collaboration with MarCom Director and Programs Manager, gather content and images or source images from shared drive; lay out content, proof/copy edit.
    • Post-production tasks include preparing PDF files, uploading to website, transmitting to EBSCO (the magazine), archiving endnotes and footnotes if applicable, sending copies of magazine to authors/contributors, archiving any associated agreements.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Two years of design school or college-level design training and four or more years of professional graphic design experience including multi-page publications and copyediting. OR;

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field and Two or more years of professional graphic design experience including multi-page publications and copyediting. OR;

    Six or more years professional graphic design experience including multi-page publications and copyediting.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of the methods and techniques of visual design and printing, including use of Pantone® Match System, type, illustration, photography, and various layout techniques.
    • Knowledge of how to prepare electronic files for printing and provide detailed written instructions/specifications to printers.
    • Demonstrated knowledge using graphic design software, especially Adobe Creative Suite including Adobe InDesign, Acrobat Pro, and Photoshop.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of computer equipment and peripherals including printers, scanners, and digital cameras.
    • Experience designing image-oriented materials, such as displays, and performing text-intensive page layout for lengthy publications.
    • Experience in proofreading own work and the work of other communicators.
    • Demonstrated knowledge in prioritizing and managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
    • Experience designing to graphic identity standards and/or experience developing a graphic identity program.
    • Experience creating styles and templates in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for use by non-designers.
    • Communicates effectively both in writing and verbally.

    PREFERRED COMPETENCIES:

    • Experience using Chicago Manual of Style.
    • Experience working for a non-profit organization.
    • Interest in history.
    • Experience serving multiple in-house or in-agency clients.

    Join this amazing team as a Grounds and Nursery Services Specialist 2. This fantastic position is a vital component to the success of the organization by maintaining the grounds and plant life surrounding the properties of the WSHS in Tacoma, WA to ensure visitor safety, cleanliness of grounds, and the beauty of WSHS landscapes. You will ensure the building is free of unsightly trash and conditions, conforms to agency’s integrated pest management program, and free of safety hazards.

    Some of what you will enjoy doing includes:

    • Clean plant beds and grounds of weeds and debris, and transplant, trim and water plants, trees, and shrubs
    • Use lawn mower, line trimmer, and edger to mow, trims and edge lawns
    • Apply fertilizers, weed and moss control products
    • Use backpack blower to remove leaves and debris from parking lots and grounds
    • Use pruning shears, loppers, and chain saws to cut and saw shrubs and trees
    • Use basic hand tools and power tools safely, and participate in safety trainings
    • Obtain CPR/First Aid & AED certification within 6 months and renew every 2 years
    • Instruct interns, co-worker, and volunteers in various job duties
    • Shovel snow and may use snow blower as needed and apply de-icing product(s)
    • Clean and keep tools in good working condition
    • Remove trash and relines receptacles
    • Cleans, sweeps, vacuums, and mops restrooms, classrooms, offices, windows, grounds, and maintenance areas
    • Replace lights, filters, assist Maintenance Mechanics if needed

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • One year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance and landscaping
    • Ability to communicate, read and understand basic English
    • Must be CPR/First Aid & AED certification within 6 months of employment
    • Ability to do physical work including: walking, stooping, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, kneeling, and working from a step ladder.
    • Able to lift/move/transfer up to 75 lbs.
    • Power tools to include: weed trimmer, chain saw, backpack blower, lawn mower, pressure washer, snow blower, and front-end loader
    • Basic hand tools: rake, pruning shears, hand edger, lopper, shovels, wheelbarrow, and pesticide sprayers
    • Communication tools to include radio, phone, and computer
